About the Artist:

Born in Sombeke in 1897 and later based in Ghent, Urbain Gerlo studied at the Academies in Waasmunster and Sint-Niklaas, under J. Horenbant. He collaborated with painter Felix Eyskens and worked as a photographer in Brussels before establishing his own gallery in Ghent. Gerlo’s work spans landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and village scenes from the Durme and Scheldt regions, often rendered with a sense of melancholy and poetic stillness.

His paintings are known for their figurative clarity, intimacy, and emotional restraint, earning critical acclaim in exhibitions across Belgium and internationally, including the 1964 and 1965 World’s Fair in New York.
