SOLD - "The Artist" A Self-Portrait by George Maitland Gilbert (British 1904-1998)

£400.00
sold out

Dimensions: 32 × 40 cm

This striking oil painting, The Artist, is a powerful self-portrait by renowned British painter George Maitland Gilbert. Executed in a bold, expressive style, it showcases Gilbert’s masterful use of impasto brushwork and dramatic lighting. The subject’s piercing blue eyes, unkempt hair, and rugged features create an intense, almost haunting atmosphere. Warm highlights contrast with deep shadows, emphasizing depth and emotion, while earthy tones and strong chiaroscuro enhance the painting’s raw intensity.

About the Artist

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1904, Gilbert trained at the Glasgow School of Art before working as a poster designer and signwriter. Despite his commercial work, he remained dedicated to fine art, exhibiting at prestigious institutions like the Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute, and the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours.

In 1950, he moved to Sutton Coldfield, joining the Birmingham Water Colour Society and the Sutton Coldfield Society of Artists. He painted many local scenes, now considered valuable historical records. Though best known for his portraits, his work also captured landscapes and urban views with remarkable depth and character.

Gilbert continued painting until late in life, leaving behind a lasting artistic legacy.
