Vintage Danish Apotheker Pendant Light by Sidse Werner for Holmegaard, 1981
Dimensions: Height: 26 cm Width: 23 cm Depth: 23 cm
Designer: Sidse Werner (Danish, 1931–1989)
Manufacturer: Holmegaard Glasværk, Denmark
Period: Designed 1981; produced throughout the 1980s
This pendant light is part of Holmegaard’s Apotheker series, designed by Danish architect and industrial designer Sidse Werner in 1981. The “lille/hvid” (small/white) variant, Model No. 362 00 35, features a handblown opal glass shade with a conical form and a distinctive stacked collar.
Werner’s design reflects the functionalist principles central to Scandinavian modernism—emphasising clean geometry, material integrity, and soft, diffused light. Crafted in white opaline glass, the pendant offers even illumination suitable for both ambient and task lighting.
Sidse Werner (1931–1989) trained as an architect and established her own design studio in 1970, producing furniture, carpets, and lighting. She is best known for her Series 9 umbrella stand and Coat Tree coat stand designed for Fritz Hansen, both celebrated examples of Danish modern design.
Produced by Holmegaard Glasværk—founded in 1825 and holding a Royal Warrant as By Appointment to The Royal Danish Court—the Apotheker series exemplifies the company’s high standard of craftsmanship and its collaborations with leading Danish designers.
